Dr. Tim Angeli is a Senior Research Fellow with the Gastrointestinal (GI) Research Group at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute (ABI), University of Auckland. He received his PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Auckland in 2014, in which he focused on defining the underlying electrophysiological control of the small intestine using high-resolution electrical mapping.Tim is currently supported by a prestigious Rutherford Discovery Fellowship from the Royal Society of New Zealand.

Prior to joining the University of Auckland, Tim attended the University of Michigan, USA, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (2008, Magna Cum Laude honours) and Master of Science in Engineering (2009), both in Biomedical Engineering. He investigated innovative methods of drug delivery based on the human body’s natural immune response for his Master’s research, and also worked at a biotechnology company where he was involved in the research and development of a bioartificial kidney.

Tim’s current research focuses on in vivo measurement and monitoring of GI electrophysiology, with a specific focus on developing new diagnostic devices and interventional therapeutics for functional GI disorders. Tim’s work to date has led to discoveries of complex electrical abnormalities in a number of GI disorders, which he now aims to leverage as an electrophysiologically-based target for new clinical diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. Tim particularly enjoys the translational engineering space, where he works toward bridging the gap from technical development to clinical application.
