Professor Gerald Tannock is a microbiologist at the University of Otago where he studies the communities of bacteria (microbiota) that inhabit the bowel of humans. He conducts fundamental research about the composition of microbiotas, especially the formation and integrated metabolism of bacterial consortia provided with complex carbohydrates. The outcomes of his fundamental research support translational projects relating to food product development and human health.

Professor Tannock is a Fellow of the Royal Society of NZ, Fellow of the American Academy for Microbiology, and holds a James Cook Research Fellowship (2014-2016).
