September 2023 - PhD student Natalie Ahlborn has yet another string to her bow. The talented milk researcher is also pretty handy in putting up fences. She and her partner Zayn Jones won the Goldpine Young Farmers’ Fencing Competition in a -2 degrees winter's morning in Temuka in July, a competition that measures speed and quality. They were featured in a monthly farming newspaper in August.
The contenders had to compete in teams of two and construct a 25-metre five-wire electric fence, including two strainer assemblies, timber posts and a hung and latched wooden gate. Natalie was the only woman competing, and she and Zayn were up against six other teams. It was their first fencing competition.
Natalie is currently completing a PhD with AgResearch and the Riddet Institute on investigating the effects of heat treatment and homogenisation on the digestion and absorption of bovine milk protein. She has just returned from presenting some of her PhD findings at the International Symposium of Dietary Protein for Human Health at Utrecht, in the Netherlands.
