Latest academic rankings recognise excellence in food science

7 October 2024 - Riddet Institute Director Harjinder Singh is again the top-ranked food scientist in New Zealand.

Stanford University and academic publisher Elsevier have just released its annual list of the top 2% most influential scientists in the world in different disciplines. The list includes data on journal articles and citation metrics to demonstrate the impact of a scientist’s work.

Stanford University’s “World’s Top 2% Scientists list” is a prestigious ranking that highlights the most influential researchers across a broad range of scientific fields.

The rankings are presented in two lists – one for 2023, and one that represents a scientist’s entire research over the course of his or her career – and Dist. Prof Singh is second in the 2023 list and tops the career rankings for food science in New Zealand. 

There are more than 233,000 global scientists in the top 2 per cent and the rankings are widely used as a measure of research excellence and impact.

Dist. Prof Singh has published more than 500 research papers in high-ranking food and dairy journals as well as in fundamental sciences journals, first publishing in 1985 from his PhD findings at University College Cork, Ireland. He has been with Massey since 1989.

He says the annual list reflects the scientific excellence of the team of researchers at the Riddet Institute striving to make a meaningful impact in the food sector globally. Several other Riddet Institute scientists also feature in the rankings.
