Dairy and sustainability expert Dr Andrew Fletcher appointed Adjunct Professor

30 July 2026 - The Riddet Institute and Massey University have appointed Dr Andrew Fletcher as an Adjunct Professor in recognition of his professional achievements and significant contributions to science, technology, and sustainability.

Dr Fletcher is a Chemical Engineer with a PhD in process modelling and control with a long history with the Riddet Institute. He is a co-founder of the Sustainable Nutrition Initiative®, hosted by the Riddet Institute. SNi® aims to provide evidence for the sustainable food systems debate. Dr Fletcher has had a key role in the development of several SNi® models including the DELTA Model®. He also supervises postgraduate researchers.

Acting Director of the Riddet Institute Distinguished Professor Paul Moughan said the Riddet Institute was delighted to be able to recognise Dr Fletcher’s sustained contributions by way of an Adjunct Professorship.

“His intellectual leadership within the internationally recognised Sustainable Nutrition Initiative has been outstanding, as has his wider mentorship of staff and students.”

Dr Fletcher has worked in the dairy industry since 1991 when he joined the New Zealand Dairy Research Institute. He has been involved in a range of research, management and strategy roles based at the Fonterra Research and Development Centre in Palmerston North.

He is currently the Global Leader – Engineering Research. This role includes assessing and developing future technology opportunities for the cooperative, work on greenhouse gas mitigation in pastoral systems, and how changes in on-farm technology are captured in product footprints.

He is co-chair of the International Dairy Federation Action Team on Life Cycle Assessment and was a co-recipient of the IDF Prize of Excellence in 2025 in recognition of the contribution of this team to the global dairy sector.
